The mission to New Caledonia, led by the Pacific Islands Forum Troika, has been postponed.
In a recent announcement, the Forum Secretariat stated that they have been collaborating with both the French government and the New Caledonian administration to align the mission’s objectives and arrangements with the expectations of all stakeholders involved.
The mission was planned to report to Forum Leaders during the upcoming 53rd PIF Leaders Meeting in Tonga, which was set for this week.
However, the New Caledonian government raised concerns related to due process and protocol that must be addressed prior to the Troika’s visit.
To allow for resolution of these concerns voiced by its members, the Forum Troika has chosen to defer their mission until after the Forum Leaders meeting in Tonga.
During this meeting, the situation in New Caledonia will be a topic of discussion, providing guidance on how to support the region further.
The Forum family has reiterated its commitment to assist New Caledonia during this period, including the Troika-led mission at a mutually agreed time.
The mission was a request made by New Caledonia’s President Louis Mapou to Forum Leaders and received approval from the French government.
