The 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting is underway in Honiara, Solomon Islands, where regional leaders are urged to transition from planning to implementation. Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has emphasized the need for decisive action over discussions amid the week-long gathering. With representatives from the Forum’s 18 member states present, the meeting is set against the thematic backdrop of “Iumi Together: Act Now for an Integrated Blue Pacific Continent,” reflecting a unified approach to the region’s pressing issues.
Among the crucial topics slated for deliberation are climate change, regional security, and economic resilience. Attendees will address upcoming milestones like COP31, to be held in Australia in 2026, where they aim to consolidate a unified Pacific stance on climate finance. A significant element of the meeting is the anticipated signing of the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF) Treaty, which will cement the PRF as a legal entity dedicated to boosting resilience against climate challenges.
Moreover, discussions will venture into the Ocean of Peace initiative, aiming to bolster regional stability and security. The ongoing review of the Regional Architecture will further guide dialogues, ensuring that the existing framework supports sustainable development and the execution of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. This strategy, which focuses on unity, resilience, and future sustainability, will be a central topic as leaders navigate pathways to reinforce regional cooperation.
With over 140 journalists assembled to ensure transparency and better communication between the Forum and Pacific communities, Prime Minister Manele has described the attendees as key collaborators in shaping the Pacific’s future. Forum Secretary General Baron Waqa expressed optimism, encouraging collective efforts to strengthen the Pacific’s global voice.
In a historic move, the Forum has decided to defer its traditional Partners Dialogue until 2026, marking a shift towards more self-reliant and region-centric governance. This move aims to finalize the Partnership and Engagement Mechanism, fortifying the Forum’s strategy for engaging with global partners in a manner aligned with regional interests.
