Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) chair Mark Brown emphasized the importance of regional autonomy as he addressed Foreign Affairs Ministers in Suva on Friday. During his opening remarks at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Mr. Brown highlighted the growing geostrategic interests affecting the region.
He stated, “We continue to battle a climate crisis that intensifies every year,” while also acknowledging emerging challenges such as cyber-attacks and transnational crime. Mr. Brown called for increased political solidarity among member nations to effectively respond to these issues when they arise.
He expressed satisfaction that the ministers were dedicating time to enhance their shared priorities and progress amidst such pressures. “We can no longer rest on our laurels and depend on the goodwill of others. To achieve our collective 2050 vision, we must be more strategic and assertive in our engagement,” he asserted.
Mr. Brown encouraged open and constructive discussions among the ministers, urging them to make the most of their time together. He also expressed gratitude for their collaboration as he approaches the end of his tenure as chair. Acknowledging the support he received from the ministers during his leadership, he described it as an honor and privilege to serve in this role for the Pacific Islands Forum.
