Senior officials from member countries of the Pacific Islands Forum have convened in Nadi, Fiji, for the fourth COP 31 Pacific Senior Officials Taskforce Meeting this week. This two-day event focuses on the progress and updates regarding the engagement of Pacific priorities within the Australia-Turkiye partnership in relation to the COP 31 Presidency.
During the meeting, participants are expected to discuss key Pre-COP processes that are planned to take place in the Pacific region, as well as the upcoming Pacific Climate Ministers Talanoa event scheduled for March. The taskforce is co-chaired by Esther O’Brien, Minister Counsellor from the Solomon Islands High Commission to Fiji, and Sally Box, Australia’s head of delegation to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The initiation of the COP31 Pacific Islands Senior Officials Taskforce marks a collaborative endeavor between Australia and the Pacific Islands, who jointly submitted a bid to host the UNFCCC. While Turkiye has been awarded the responsibility of hosting COP31, including a summit for world leaders, the UNFCCC Pre-COP meeting will take place in the Pacific Islands with support from Australia. This partnership aims to prioritize climate action in the region and shape the agenda leading up to the critical climate discussions.
The establishment of this taskforce exemplifies a proactive approach to addressing climate change impacts, showcasing the commitment of Pacific nations and Australia to work collaboratively towards sustainable solutions for the challenges posed by climate change.
