The Oceania Pacific Hockey Cup has made its triumphant return to Suva, marking a significant moment for hockey in the Pacific after an eight-year hiatus. This year’s event signifies the revival of regional hockey, particularly following the setbacks experienced during the pandemic and ongoing infrastructure challenges.
The last edition of the tournament took place in 2016, during which both Fiji’s men’s and women’s teams achieved noteworthy victories. As the host nation, Fiji is under pressure to uphold its legacy against tough competitors, including seven men’s teams and six women’s teams from the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Zealand Pasifika.
Craig Gribble, CEO of the Oceania Hockey Federation, shared his enthusiasm for the tournament’s return to Suva, pointing out that Fiji has long served as a central hub for Pacific hockey. With the disruptions caused by COVID-19 and delays in upgrading the playing turf now behind them, Gribble believes this event presents a perfect platform to highlight regional talent.
In preparation for the competition, Fiji’s men’s and women’s teams have been training diligently, and local supporters are hopeful for their success as the tournament progresses, especially for the upcoming medal rounds later this week. Gribble emphasized the team’s determination, stating, “This is their home patch, and they always rise to the occasion.”
Beyond vying for victory, the tournament provides critical opportunities for teams to earn international ranking points and gain exposure, which is essential for the development of hockey throughout the region. For Fiji, this event stands as a chance to reaffirm its status as a powerhouse in Pacific hockey while simultaneously nurturing the sport’s growth.
The excitement continues as the games carry on today, with yesterday’s match results reflecting a competitive spirit: NZ Pasifika 5-0 Tonga (W), Samoa 1-7 Fiji (W), NZ Fiji 8-0 Tonga (M), Solomon Islands 5-3 Samoa (M), and Fiji Warriors 5-1 Fiji (M).
This revival of the Oceania Pacific Hockey Cup could usher in a new era for hockey in the region, promoting unity and healthy competition among Pacific nations while inspiring the next generation of players.
