Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, has emphasized the urgent need for a collective effort to enhance surveillance and response systems against infectious diseases in the Pacific region. This call to action was made during the opening of the 2025 Regional Meeting of the Pacific Public Health Surveillance Network (PPHSN) in Nadi.

Dr. Tudravu pointed out that the region is grappling with both communicable and non-communicable diseases, making the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic particularly pertinent. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed optimism that collaboration through platforms like PPHSN will support the implementation of advanced surveillance systems.

Looking forward, Dr. Tudravu predicted a significant expansion in surveillance technology over the next decade. He highlighted the potential for integrating electronic medical records and laboratory information systems, along with innovations such as artificial intelligence, to bolster responses to health threats. He also noted that this year’s discussions aim to raise awareness regarding crucial public health concerns and strategize on effective responses moving forward.

Additionally, he addressed the pressing issue of dengue fever, pointing out the limitations of current prevention methods, which largely rely on chemical sprays and source reduction. He mentioned that countries including Fiji are exploring alternative approaches, such as using Wolbachia mosquitoes and sterilization techniques, to enhance their vector control efforts.

The collaborative dialogue convened at the meeting is seen as vital for fostering innovative solutions and reinforcing health security across the Pacific region. Dr. Tudravu urged partners to continue supporting the PPHSN in strengthening health response systems to effectively tackle regional health challenges.

The proactive stance taken by health leaders in the Pacific underscores a hopeful trajectory towards a more resilient health infrastructure, one capable of addressing both current and future public health threats effectively.
