Located in the Arts Village of Pacific Harbour, SKINNY Bean Cafe is emerging as a versatile dining option that caters to a range of tastes, from health-conscious choices to comfort food favorites. This cafe stands out not only for its diverse menu but also for its affordability, making it an attractive spot for visitors who may not have access to transportation or wish to save on dining expenses compared to nearby resorts.
The cafe features a robust menu that includes everything from omelettes and hearty pizzas to delicious burgers, all served alongside quality coffee. Patrons have the option to enjoy their meals in a lovely courtyard, providing a serene setting for a relaxing dining experience while exploring the vibrant surroundings of Pacific Harbour.
Owner Nilesh Kumar, who resides in Navua with his family, has a rich background in the food industry that spans nearly a decade. Before launching SKINNY Bean in 2018, he worked as a food and beverage manager at Lagoon Resort and other establishments, which equipped him with valuable insights for running his own business. With support from his family, he ventured into entrepreneurship, and the cafe quickly gained traction in its first two years before facing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The onset of the pandemic forced SKINNY Bean to adapt by operating with limited hours and reduced staff. However, post-pandemic recovery showed promise, although recent changes in the area, such as the closure of a nearby bank and supermarket, have created obstacles by reducing foot traffic. Despite these challenges, Nilesh remains optimistic about the future, relying heavily on loyal local customers for support. He acknowledges that this community backing has been vital to the survival of his business.
The cafe experiences its busiest days over the weekends, while weekdays tend to be quieter. Nilesh notes that when local hotels, such as The Pearl Resort and Uprising, are fully booked, the influx of tourists also contributes significantly to customer traffic. He takes pride in the popularity of his pizzas, which he claims are the best in Pacific Harbour, encouraging people to visit and taste for themselves.
Currently, SKINNY Bean operates daily from 7 AM to 7 PM, and Nilesh employs five staff members, alongside assistance from his family. He remains focused on maintaining steady growth while meeting the preferences of the Pacific Harbour community, which he views as crucial for ongoing success. Though there are no immediate plans for expansion, he is open to opportunities that might arise in the future, reinforcing his commitment to stability and customer satisfaction.
Nilesh’s journey highlights not just the resilience of local businesses in the face of adversity but also the power of community support. His dedication to quality food and customer experience continues to shine through in his endeavours, signaling a hopeful outlook for both SKINNY Bean and the local dining scene as it adapts to new challenges.
