With less than a month remaining until the SOL23 Pacific Games, a significant sporting event that will be held in Honiara, Solomon Islands, from November 19 to December 2, Islands Business highlights some of the dedicated athletes who will represent their home countries. A total of 19 nations will participate in 25 different sports during this prestigious gathering.

One athlete making waves is Samoan boxing champion Ato Plodzicki-Faoagali. Currently residing in Sydney, Australia, Ato is the reigning light heavyweight champion of the Pacific Games and is deeply committed to his training regimen. He shared insights into his preparations, noting, “It’s been good. Very tough. A lot of running. A lot of weights and a mixture of everything. I’ve always come in prepared for the Games.”

Ato’s journey in boxing began at a young age, with his father, Steven Faoagali, serving as both his coach and an unwavering source of motivation. “My Dad has always been a big fan of boxing,” Ato explains. This familial bond drives Ato to excel, as he aims to provide for his daughter and family.

Boxing presents its challenges, particularly in balancing training with work commitments and the search for sparring partners. Ato acknowledges this struggle, especially in Australia. Additionally, he noted the difficulty in securing sponsorships to support his boxing career, emphasizing the critical role of his father in navigating these challenges.

As Ato approaches the SOL23 as his final amateur competition, he is keen to transition into professional boxing. His future aspirations include a match in Samoa and potentially competing for a spot in the Olympics, contingent upon securing necessary sponsorships.

Reflecting on the upcoming Pacific Games, Ato invites spectators to witness the action, stating, “There’s always challenges…so always come ready. If you’re in the islands, come watch the games or tune in online to enjoy some action.”

This year’s Pacific Games not only represents a significant competitive platform for athletes like Ato but also symbolizes a celebration of the spirit and resilience of the Pacific Islands. The anticipation surrounding the event highlights the dedication and passion of athletes committed to their sports while also showcasing the importance of community support in their journeys.
