Pacific COP31 Bid Heats Up as Ardern Champions Regional Summit

Former New Zealand Prime Minister Dame Jacinda Ardern has advocated for a dedicated climate summit for the Pacific, which she believes should be a part of Australia’s proposal to host the next COP summit. While participating in discussions at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Ardern emphasized the urgency of a Pacific-hosted climate conference, stating, “It is time for a Pacific COP.” She acknowledged the sensitive diplomatic negotiations involved, especially given the competing interests in hosting the event.

Ardern, who serves as the Special Envoy for Oceania, highlighted that Australia has crafted a persuasive bid for COP31 in partnership with Pacific nations, a proposal that has garnered considerable support from the climate community. She encouraged those with influence to promote the cause, stressing that it’s essential for Pacific representatives to present their perspectives without the burden of extensive travel. “It’s time for the region to showcase its innovations addressing the immediate impacts of climate change,” she stated.

Her sentiments were echoed by Fiji’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Mosese Bulitavu, who described COP30 as a pivotal opportunity for global climate finance and ambition. He outlined five key priorities necessary for effective climate action, which include a new goal for climate financing and greater representation for small island states in multilateral fund governance. “Decisions that shape our future cannot be made without us,” Bulitavu emphasized, urging the international community to heed the voices of Pacific nations.

Ardern’s call for a Pacific-focused COP aligns with the Pacific Islands Forum Foreign Ministers’ strong backing of Australia’s bid, framing it as a necessary platform for highlighting regional challenges and ensuring the voices of vulnerable nations are amplified. This coalition reflects a broader push for bold climate leadership from the Pacific, aiming to alleviate the significant threats posed by climate change, especially in light of the tumultuous backdrop of rising global temperatures affecting island states.

The contributions from Pacific leaders at COP are critical. With ongoing discussions about host nation dynamics, the push for Australia to co-host COP31 now includes strong regional support, tying local unity to the success of the summit. It represents not only a chance for climate action but also a deep commitment to preserving the unique environments and livelihoods of the Pacific peoples.

As the global community gears up for the talks, the hope is that these efforts will forge a path for essential international cooperation, with the Pacific leading the charge toward a more sustainable and resilient future.
