The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is hosting its Oceania regional conservation forum this week in Suva, co-hosted by the Fijian Government. The conference aims to gather participants to exchange ideas, celebrate conservation successes, and set future goals.
Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister, Manoa Kamikamica, expressed the nation’s pleasure in hosting the forum, noting that it provides a vital opportunity to address issues important to Pacific communities.
IUCN Director General Dr. Grethel Aguilar emphasized the organization’s commitment to advocating for ecosystem protection and biodiversity conservation, highlighting the importance of integrating scientific research with traditional knowledge from Indigenous peoples.
Dr. Aguilar stated that the Pacific is IUCN’s largest geographical region. By co-hosting the forum, the Fijian Government aims to enhance its ability to conserve natural resources and protect biodiversity.
Kamikamica remarked on Fiji’s progress toward sustainable development, acknowledging innovative local solutions but also highlighting significant challenges in securing stable, adequate financing for large-scale initiatives. He pointed out that these financial difficulties are common among many Pacific Island nations due to their small administrations and complex financial systems.
The forum is scheduled to conclude on Thursday.
