The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is hosting its Oceania regional conservation forum in Suva this week. Co-hosted by the Fijian Government, the conference aims to gather, share, and celebrate conservation achievements while establishing future initiatives.
Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica expressed Fiji’s enthusiasm in hosting the forum, highlighting its role in discussing critical issues facing Pacific communities.
IUCN Director General Dr. Grethel Aguilar emphasized the organization’s commitment to advocating for ecosystem protection and biodiversity conservation. She stated, “IUCN is proud to be amongst the strongest advocates for the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity conservation, through the promotion of world-leading science and deep traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples, all amplified through the collective voice of our Members.”
Dr. Aguilar noted that the Pacific represents IUCN’s largest geographical region. By co-hosting the forum, the Fijian Government aims to enhance its effectiveness in conserving natural resources and protecting biodiversity.
Kamikamica pointed out that Fiji is making strides in promoting environmentally sustainable development, with several innovative local solutions documented. However, he acknowledged ongoing challenges in securing reliable and timely financing to implement large-scale solutions. He remarked, “This is a common challenge across most Pacific Island countries largely due to our small administrations and the complexities of financial mechanisms in place.”
The forum is set to conclude this Thursday.
