The newly inaugurated Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies (PCMS) at Fiji National University (FNU) in Suva represents a significant investment of $15 million aimed at enhancing education, research, and innovation within the maritime sector. The center will particularly focus on sustainability and the development of the Pacific Blue Economy.
At the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the importance of merging traditional navigation techniques with contemporary technology, which is vital for cultivating the next generation of maritime leaders. This innovative approach seeks to empower students with the knowledge and skills required to navigate the complexities of modern maritime industries.
FNU Vice Chancellor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba highlighted that the PCMS is in line with crucial national initiatives, such as the Pacific Blue Ocean 2050 strategy. This alignment aims to foster global partnerships and ensure that academic curriculums are updated to meet evolving industry demands.
In addition to its educational efforts, the center is establishing partnerships, including an initiative with Fiji Water, to further enhance its contribution to the sector.
The establishment of the PCMS is a promising stride toward creating a more sustainable and knowledgeable maritime community in the Pacific, paving the way for enhanced collaboration and innovation in the region.
This development not only reflects a commitment to advancing maritime education but also signifies a hopeful outlook for future maritime leaders who will play pivotal roles in the sustainability and economic resilience of the Pacific Islands.
