The Pacific Centre for Border Management and Security has been inaugurated at the Fiji National University (FNU) in Nadi, a landmark development for both Fiji and the Pacific region. Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka emphasized the Centre’s importance in reinforcing national stability, enhancing trade, and safeguarding borders. He stated that the Centre will provide Border Management Agencies and Discipline Forces with essential knowledge and skills to confront contemporary challenges, including transnational crime, human trafficking, and the trafficking of illegal goods.

Furthermore, the establishment of this Centre marks a collaborative effort, with strong support from Australia highlighted by Gavoka. FNU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, elaborated that the Centre aims to foster security and trade facilitation while enhancing capacity-building efforts in the region. She expressed pride in collaborating with Australia’s Centre for Customs & Excise Studies (CCES) and the Oceania Customs Organisation (OCO) to deliver world-class training and expertise in these critical sectors.

Through comprehensive training programs, the Centre strives to bolster the capabilities of professionals engaged in border management, customs, and national security, ensuring that Fiji and its neighbors are resilient against evolving threats. The opening of this Centre not only represents a pivotal advancement in regional security but also embodies hope for a collaborative and secure future across the Pacific islands, fostering stability and enabling prosperity.

In summary, the inauguration of the Pacific Centre for Border Management and Security is a significant step towards enhancing regional cooperation in security and trade. The investment in training and resources reinforces Fiji’s commitment to building a robust framework against modern challenges, promising a brighter and safer future for the Pacific region.
