Pacific Aviation Takes Flight: New ICAO Office Opens in Nadi

The aviation sector in the Pacific region plays a crucial role, as the islands rely on dependable air transportation to connect with the world, boost tourism, and foster economic growth. This significance was emphasized by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Minister for Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka during the inauguration of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) Liaison Office in Nadi on Friday.

Mr. Gavoka stated that the establishment of the office represents the region’s steadfast commitment to tackling the unique challenges faced by the area and promoting sustainable development in aviation. He offered a warm welcome to the chief guest, ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, highlighting that his presence signifies the importance of this initiative.

“Your support and participation are invaluable as we embark on this new chapter of collaboration and progress,” Mr. Gavoka remarked. He noted that the opening of the ICAO regional office in Nadi is a testament to a united determination to enhance aviation safety, security, and sustainability.

“This office will act as a central point for communication, technical support, and capacity building to address the specific needs of PSIDS in the Pacific,” he added. Furthermore, he pointed out that the Pacific is especially susceptible to the effects of climate change, making it essential for aviation practices to align with global sustainability goals.

Mr. Gavoka expressed confidence that the new office would serve as a symbol of progress through collaboration and innovation.
