The aviation sector in the Pacific region is crucial for the islands, as they rely on dependable and efficient air transport to connect with the world, boost tourism, and foster economic growth. This was emphasized by Acting Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka, who also serves as the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, during the inauguration of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) Liaison Office in Nadi on Friday.
Mr. Gavoka stated that the new office represents the region’s strong commitment to tackling the unique challenges it faces while promoting sustainable aviation development. He warmly welcomed ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, noting that his presence highlights the significance of this initiative.
He remarked, “Your support and participation are invaluable as we embark on this new chapter of collaboration and progress.” Mr. Gavoka noted that the establishment of the regional ICAO office in Nadi underscores a collective determination to enhance aviation safety, security, and sustainability.
“This office will act as a communication hub and provide technical support and capacity building tailored to meet the specific needs of PSIDS in the Pacific,” he explained. He also stressed that the Pacific’s vulnerability to climate change necessitates alignment of aviation practices with global sustainability goals.
Mr. Gavoka expressed confidence that the office would become a symbol of progress, collaboration, and innovation in the aviation field.
