A tenant from the Toko 999-year lease raised questions regarding the original landowners during a consultation in Tavua. Retired miner Nitendra Singh highlighted that there are seven mataqali (clans) in the area and asked for clarification on which mataqali holds rightful ownership of the land.
In response, Solomone Nata, the chief executive officer of the TLTB (Turaga ni Kawa Bula), assured the attendees that he would follow up on their concerns. Nata suggested that the rightful owners might include mataqali Navusabalavu and Tilivasewa, but emphasized the complexity of the situation, noting, “there are a lot of issues you know.”
He further explained that upcoming discussions with landowners will be handled discreetly to ensure a peaceful resolution. Nata stated his commitment to consulting both tenants and landowners, making it clear that communication would happen through proper channels to avoid miscommunication.
This consultation signifies a step towards greater transparency and dialogue between landowners and tenants, indicating a commitment to resolving ownership issues collaboratively. By addressing these concerns, the TLTB aims to foster a more cohesive community and uphold the rights of all involved parties.
In summary, the event highlighted the need for ongoing discussions about land ownership within the community while emphasizing careful negotiation to resolve existing disputes. The overall tone encourages hope for a mutual understanding and future cooperation.
