The Suva Magistrate’s Court was informed yesterday that the overseas medical treatment being pursued by Thakor Punja, who is facing drug-related charges, is not urgent or life-threatening. CWM Hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Luke Nasedra, presented this assessment to Magistrate Yogesh Prasad, noting that while the specific treatment Mr. Punja is seeking is unavailable locally, his condition does not necessitate immediate travel.

Dr. Nasedra clarified that the typical protocol for securing overseas medical treatment includes confirmation from a foreign hospital, a crucial detail that is missing from Mr. Punja’s medical documentation. He indicated that although Mr. Punja is requesting to travel to Australia for surgery following injuries sustained in a car accident back in April 2025, there are local treatment options available that could be utilized, including consultations with an orthopaedic specialist.

While Dr. Nasedra acknowledged that untreated conditions could potentially worsen, he emphasized that many patients with similar issues are currently waiting for care. He also pointed out that CWM Hospital has the capacity to handle such procedures, with visiting specialists providing necessary services.

Mr. Punja is facing three charges of drug possession, and the court is expected to deliver a ruling on February 6. This case highlights the ongoing challenges within the healthcare system, particularly concerning access to timely and adequate medical treatment. Despite the hurdles, there remains a hopeful outlook as local facilities and specialists continue to work towards addressing patients’ needs effectively.
