There are currently only two applicants for the position of head coach for the Fiji Pearls, a role that was advertised on November 5. Notably, both candidates hail from overseas, a fact confirmed by Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki. The application period for this vacancy closed on November 22, and Sorovaki stated that interviews will take place in the next two weeks, with an aim to appoint a new coach before January.
RubyAnn Sorovaki remarked, “Just two (applicants), both from overseas.” The outgoing head coach, Unaisi Rokoura, communicated that this week will be her last as she transitions to her pending leave. She mentioned her contract was not renewed and that she had submitted her application to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Both the coach and CEO had their three-year terms conclude this year, having been appointed in December and September 2021, respectively. Sorovaki also mentioned that there are four applicants for the CEO role, all local candidates, and each will be interviewed.
The new coach and CEO are expected to be announced by the end of this month. In a related note, concerning the proposed Pacific Series discussions held with Netball New Zealand earlier this year, Sorovaki explained that plans were canceled to better prepare the team, considering funding opportunities and the requirement to host a series of that caliber.
This development highlights the proactive steps Netball Fiji is taking to strengthen its leadership and prepare for future challenges. The appointment of a new head coach could bring fresh perspectives and strategies that might enhance the team’s performance on the international stage. Meanwhile, the focus on local leadership for the CEO role reflects a commitment to nurturing homegrown talent within the organization, which is promising for the future of netball in Fiji.
