The Acting Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Social Protection, Selina Kuruleca, has expressed serious concerns regarding the safety of students following the emergence of a video that depicted an overloaded bus. The alarming footage, which has circulated widely on social media, shows several students precariously sitting on the edges of bus windows, jeopardizing their safety during transit.
In response to the incident, Kuruleca has taken the initiative to file a formal complaint with the Land Transport Authority (LTA). She emphasized that no child should endure such risks while traveling to and from school and highlighted that ensuring safe transport is a shared responsibility that involves drivers, bus operators, parents, and the broader community.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the CEO of the LTA confirmed that the issue has been escalated to the enforcement team. Consequently, a Traffic Infringement Notice has been issued for the bus operator due to violations involving the transportation of excess passengers and careless driving.
The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection has also reiterated the importance of passenger safety, particularly regarding students. They stressed that any practices of overloading or endangering children while commuting will not be tolerated. Additionally, parents are encouraged to engage with their children about safe behaviors on buses and report any unsafe conditions encountered.
