The government, with assistance from the Australian government, has initiated reforms for civil servants. This was disclosed by Finance Minister Biman Prasad in Nadi in response to a query from Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chair, Dr. Ram Raju, regarding wage increases for civil servants.
Dr. Raju inquired about how the government plans to increase activities for civil servants in light of the wage increment. Minister Prasad emphasized the importance of ensuring the well-being of civil servants and mentioned that large budgets allocated to various ministries often go unutilized.
He highlighted environmental issues such as water supply for Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, noting that if ministries like Public Works and Lands do not coordinate effectively, these projects may not be accomplished. Prasad mentioned that despite a significant budget allocation for the health ministry last year, poor utilization led to delays in receiving medical supplies and unmet service deliveries.
In conclusion, Prasad stated that the government expects civil servants, permanent secretaries, and ministers to deliver services according to budget allocations. He revealed plans to establish a training institute for the civil service to further support these reforms.
