Nearly half of the Early Childhood Education students from a kindergarten in Nausori have been transitioned to a nearby primary school, where they commenced full-day classes today. This move results from growing concerns among parents about accommodating all students in the existing kindergarten facilities. The Ministry of Education’s recent decision to merge morning and afternoon sessions into a single full-day class led to fears of overcrowding.

Parents have reported that currently, some ECE students are being housed in the library and an additional classroom of the primary school, highlighting the urgent need for effective planning and consultation prior to such significant changes. Many parents expressed worries regarding the appropriateness of these arrangements for young children at a critical developmental stage.

The decision to relocate students appears to be a response to the complaints raised by parents who were troubled by the lack of foresight in this policy. Questions surrounding why such influential decisions were made without adequate planning remain prevalent among the community.

Following the parents’ objections, a meeting was said to have taken place involving the Education Minister and other stakeholders, sparking hope for a review of educational policies affecting foundational learning.

This situation echoes broader issues within Fiji’s education system, such as overcrowding and facility inadequacies in many schools. The changes implemented have raised alarms about students’ well-being and underscore the importance of appropriate early childhood education environments.

As communities advocate for thoughtful evaluation and dialogue regarding educational policies, there is potential for positive outcomes, fostering a supportive environment where young learners can thrive. By addressing these pressing concerns, the Ministry could make strides towards enhancing the educational experience for students in their formative years.
