Transitioning from a background in science to the fields of accounting and economics proved to be a challenging journey for 21-year-old Sanskar Kapadia. However, his hard work and perseverance bore fruit when he, along with Kamal Prasad and Fatima Siddeqa, was honored with the Most Outstanding Accounting and Finance Student (Department) Award for 2024 during the University of Fiji School of Business and Economics ceremony held in Lautoka last week.
Reflecting on his experience, Mr. Kapadia acknowledged the difficulties he faced in adapting to a new academic field. “It wasn’t easy to shift to a completely new field, and I struggled with concepts I was unfamiliar with,” he admitted. With the guidance from his lecturers and a steadfast commitment to his studies, he gradually gained confidence. He also shared that balancing academic responsibilities with career preparation was another significant challenge. “Managing deadlines, assignments, and preparing for the future wasn’t straightforward,” he explained. Through effective organization, setting clear priorities, and even working part-time after classes, he maximized his productivity. These experiences instilled in him resilience and adaptability.
Kamal Prasad, a native of Ba, also recounted her trials throughout her academic journey. Motivated by her mother’s advice to strive for success, she faced financial difficulties, particularly with transport costs. “My father was my biggest support, always assisting me in every way,” she expressed, highlighting the importance of familial support during her challenges. With encouragement from her friend Ruqayyah Hakim, she managed to overcome academic obstacles and pursue her goals with determination.
Fatima Aiyesha Siddeqa, the 2021 dux of Nadi Muslim College, drew inspiration from her mother and grandmother’s sacrifices. “I never wanted their efforts to go to waste,” she stated, emphasizing that success extends beyond personal achievements. For her, leaving a legacy is vital. As the eldest daughter, her aspiration has always been to make her family proud. Her aunt, whom she regards as both an inspiration and her best friend, has played a pivotal role in her journey. “Success is seeing my aunt, grandparents, and mother smile with pride at my accomplishments,” she noted.
These students’ stories highlight the power of resilience, support from loved ones, and determination in overcoming challenges. Their accomplishments serve as an inspiration for others navigating similar paths, proving that with dedication and the right support, success is attainable, no matter the obstacles faced.
This article also serves as a reminder that education can empower individuals to change their life trajectories, inspiring hope for future students who may be considering a similar transition. As they continue to build their legacies, these young achievers could pave the way for a brighter future for others in their communities.
