Fiji Airways men’s rugby sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau has made clear his intentions for 2025: to prioritize family time while continuing the quest for sporting excellence. At 39 years old and hailing from Namuka-i-Lau, Kolinisau has been separated from his family for significant periods since he took on the coaching position in March 2024. His wife, Mere Tavu Fa, and their children reside in the United States, although they do visit Fiji regularly.
“I just want more family time, to win the HSBC SVNS series, and to be a better person than I was last year,” Kolinisau expressed, reflecting on both personal and professional growth. As a gold medalist from the 2016 Olympics, he understands the importance of developing not just as a coach but also as a person.
Under Kolinisau’s leadership, the national team achieved impressive milestones, including a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games just months after he assumed the role. Most recently, he led the team to its first Cup title in Dubai, snapping a 25-tournament winless streak. Currently, the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team tops the HSBC SVNS series with 36 points, ahead of rivals Spain and France.
Looking ahead, Kolinisau is dedicated to maintaining this strong performance and is eager to learn from fellow coaches to enhance his training strategies. In his role as ambassador for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, he will announce the national squad for the event. The selection process for the Perth 7s tournament set for January 24-26 will follow.
Kolinisau’s commitment to balancing family life with his professional responsibilities serves as a positive example for athletes everywhere, highlighting that personal fulfillment and professional success can coexist. As he navigates this transformative year, there is hope that he will not only strengthen family ties but also continue to lead the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team to great heights.
In summary, Osea Kolinisau is poised for a pivotal year that embodies the blend of family values and sportsmanship, fostering a richer atmosphere for both personal and team achievements.
