The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a series of significant alterations to the schedule of events leading up to the Oscars due to the devastating wildfires currently affecting the Los Angeles area. In a heartfelt statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang expressed their sorrow over the profound losses experienced by many in the community and reaffirmed the Academy’s commitment to support those impacted.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Academy has extended the voting period for Oscar nominations until January 17 at 5:00 PM PST. This represents a shift from the original deadline of January 12, which was initially moved to January 14 following the outbreak of the fires. The announcement of the nominations has now been rescheduled to January 23 at 5:30 AM PST and will be conducted virtually, without any in-person media coverage, to accommodate those affected by the fires.
Additionally, the traditional Oscars Nominees Luncheon, scheduled for February 10, has been canceled, along with the Scientific and Technical Awards, the new date for which will be announced later. Nevertheless, the Academy has confirmed that the 97th Oscars ceremony will still take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood.
