The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced adjustments to the schedule of events leading up to the Oscars due to the ongoing wildfires affecting the Los Angeles area. In a heartfelt statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang expressed their dismay at the widespread devastation caused by the fires, emphasizing the Academy’s role as a unifying force in the film industry during challenging times.

To accommodate the needs of its members during this crisis, the Academy has extended the nomination voting period until January 17 at 5:00 PM PST. This extension follows an earlier adjustment after the fires began, pushing the original voting deadline from January 12 to January 14. Additionally, the announcement of Oscar nominations has been rescheduled to January 23 at 5:30 AM PST and will be conducted virtually, without in-person media coverage.

Included in the changes is the cancellation of the traditional Oscars Nominees Luncheon, initially set for February 10, while the date for the Scientific and Technical Awards, originally planned for February 18, will be determined later. However, the Academy has reaffirmed that the 97th Oscars ceremony will still proceed as scheduled on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood.

In their statement, Kramer and Yang highlighted the importance of supporting frontline workers assisting with wildfire relief, stating a commitment to foster community resilience through celebration and unity. They noted, “We will get through this together and bring a sense of healing to our global film community.” This dedication to honoring those affected and encouraging relief efforts illustrates a compassionate response from the artistic community amid adversity.

While the changes reflect the seriousness of the ongoing wildfires, they also highlight the strength and determination of the film industry to adapt and support one another during difficult times. The Academy’s proactive measures reaffirm the collective spirit within the film community, and the organization is poised to not only celebrate cinematic achievements but also contribute positively to recovery efforts across affected regions.
