Organic Elegance: Meet the Sarong Queen of the Friendly North!

In a remarkable showcase of cultural and environmental awareness, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representing Miss Labasa Divisional Hospital, won the Best Sarong award during the Global Night at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.

The 22-year-old captivated the audience on Monday evening at Subrail Park in Labasa with a sarong that transcended mere fashion, telling a story centered on organic farming. The garment, elegantly styled with a twist around the neck, marked the beginning of a narrative rooted in organic agriculture.

Adi Marica’s inventive presentation not only secured her the top prize but also highlighted the importance of sustainable farming in a striking visual format. A representative from the pathology department of Labasa Divisional Hospital mentioned that the sarong’s knot represented a strong commitment to caring for the planet and endorsing sustainable farming practices.

“After a rewarding day spent on the farm, the sarong seamlessly transitions to a stylish beach ensemble with a knot below the bust,” Ms. Waqaniburotu explained. “It embodies a relaxed sophistication, ideal for enjoying the coastal breezes.”

“My headpiece, crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, symbolizes the fruits and vegetables from the organic farm,” she added. “I was in disbelief when I won the award and felt so emotional, especially since all the other contestants had beautiful sarongs.”

She went on to share that her sister and she collaborated on the creation of her sarong, emphasizing their sisterly bond and dedication, which ultimately paid off.

Currently, she is in her final year at Fiji National University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. Adi Marica comes from Makadru, Matuku in Lau, and has maternal ties to Taviya Village in Ovalau. Her advocacy focuses on revitalizing the North through the promotion of organic farming.

“I firmly believe that organic farming paves the way for a healthier and sustainable future, and I am deeply passionate about it,” she stated.

She is one of nine contestants competing for the Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North title this Saturday.
