Optimizing Reforms for Civil Servants: A Closer Look

The government has implemented reforms for civil servants with assistance from the Australian government. This was disclosed by Finance Minister Biman Prasad in Nadi, in response to a query from Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry chair, Dr. Ram Raju, about the increase in wages for civil servants.

Dr. Raju asked, “For the increase in wages for the civil service, how is the government going to increase the activities for them?”

Mr. Prasad responded, “One of the variables in the equation is always making sure that civil servants are doing well.”

The finance minister pointed out that significant budgets were allocated to various ministries but were not utilized effectively. For instance, addressing environmental issues such as water supply for Viti Levu and Vanua Levu requires the coordination of public works and lands ministries, which needs to systematically deliver on these plans.

He noted that a substantial budget was allocated for the health ministry last year, but its utilization was inadequate. This resulted in delays in medical supplies and drugs, ultimately affecting service delivery.

Mr. Prasad emphasized that there is an expectation for the civil service, including permanent secretaries and ministers, to deliver according to the allocated budget.

He also revealed plans to establish a training institute for the civil service.
