A group of former members of the FijiFirst party is in the process of establishing a new political entity called the G16 in preparation for the 2026 general elections. This announcement was made by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu during a press conference at the Suva Business Centre. The G16 members believe they can offer a viable alternative to the current government, which they describe as being overshadowed by “chaos and scandals” under Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

Seruiratu linked the formation of the G16 to significant political changes, particularly the recent deregistration of the FijiFirst party. He emphasized their commitment to serve as a “loyal opposition,” aiming to clarify their stance to supporters who seek direction amidst the evolving political landscape. According to Seruiratu, the G16 aspires to embody the principles of unity, fairness, and responsible leadership grounded in humility and shared goals.

Criticism of the coalition government was a central theme in Seruiratu’s remarks, particularly concerning its failure to uphold promises made during the 2022 elections. He pointed out that instead of the smaller government originally pledged, the current administration has led to the largest cabinet in Fiji’s history, comprising 22 ministers. This contradiction highlights concerns over accountability and governance, as many policies that were previously criticized as “freebies” continue unaltered.

The G16 aims to create a “safe, secure, and prosperous Fiji for all Fijians,” focusing on merit-based equality and national unity. Learning from the successes and failures of their previous tenure under FijiFirst, the G16 is poised to advocate for effective governance that resonates with the needs of the populace.

As Fiji approaches the 2026 elections, the emergence of the G16 signifies a hopeful shift in the political landscape. This initiative encourages increased voter engagement and presents a chance for diverse political voices to flourish, ultimately revitalizing the democratic process in Fiji. The dynamics surrounding this new party form an optimistic narrative, suggesting that the G16 may inspire meaningful changes and greater accountability in governance, directly addressing the pressing challenges faced by Fijians.

In summary, the formation of the G16 marks a significant evolution in Fijian politics, with a hopeful outlook toward improved representation and governance as the country prepares for its upcoming elections.
