The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, announced that all 26 members of the Opposition will operate under two distinct working groups or blocs. During a session in Parliament, he identified the groups as the 16-bloc and the 9-bloc.
The 16-bloc will be led by Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, with Jone Usamate serving as Whip and Ketan Lal as deputy Whip. Meanwhile, the 9-bloc will be headed by Ioane Naivalurua, with Viliame Naupoto as Whip and Alipate Tuicolo as deputy Whip.
Ratu Naiqama emphasized that all 26 members remain part of the Opposition, functioning within these two newly established blocs. He also noted that one member is currently awaiting the results of an appeal to the Fijian Electoral Commission, which may affect his status and decision.
In accordance with the Standing Orders, Ratu Naiqama stated that his office will review the membership of the six standing committees and the four select committees to ensure fair representation for both working groups. He indicated that further information regarding this review will be shared later this week.
Additionally, Ratu Naiqama encouraged the Members of Parliament to engage in constructive dialogue and prioritize the interests of the people they represent.
