Opposition MP Premila Kumar has expressed deep concerns over the Prime Minister’s decision to take direct control of a national educational institution, highlighting the implications for governance, accountability, and the risk of political interference. Kumar emphasized that educational institutions should function independently and be managed by professionals rather than being subjected to direct political oversight.
Kumar remarked, “Education is too important to be politicised,” stressing that any intervention from the Prime Minister’s office should be justified and have a specific timeline. While she acknowledged that reform may be necessary in certain cases, she warned that bypassing established governance structures could set a troubling precedent.
She raised pertinent questions regarding the involvement of the relevant line ministry and statutory boards, which, she noted, were not permitted to fulfill their oversight roles. Kumar insisted that the public deserves transparency concerning the issues at hand, including clarity on culpability and the perceived inadequacies of existing accountability measures.
In her call for greater transparency, Kumar urged the Government to disclose comprehensive details about the decision, including its legal foundation, the expected duration of the takeover, and the objectives it intends to achieve. She emphasized that trust in Fiji’s education sector hinges on stability, independence, and respect for institutional autonomy. Her concerns are particularly relevant as the country endeavors to rebuild confidence in its public institutions.
