The Leader of Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has expressed strong criticism towards Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for assuming the Minister for Home Affairs position, previously held by Pio Tikoduadua. Seruiratu views this move as a potential “conflict of interest” since Rabuka also chairs the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), which is responsible for recommending the appointment of the Commissioner of Police to the President of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

The position of Commissioner of Police has been vacant for over a year following the suspension and incarceration of the former commissioner, Sitiveni Qiliho. Seruiratu urged Rabuka to respect the appointment process for the new Commissioner, emphasizing that the responsible minister must be consulted prior to final decisions being made. He highlighted the importance of maintaining independence in the COC’s recommendations.

The Prime Minister defended his actions, asserting that there is no direct conflict of interest in holding both portfolios, and he would adhere to the COC’s guidance in the selection process.

This controversy follows a significant reshuffle in government positions after allegations of impropriety involving Tikoduadua’s management of the Immigration Department’s passport issuance processes, particularly relating to members of the Grace Road Group, which has faced serious human rights allegations.

The discourse around this situation serves as a pointed reminder of the complexity and potential pitfalls of political leadership, especially when it involves multiple significant roles. While questions linger regarding the appropriateness of these appointments, there is hope that the ongoing discussions will lead to a transparent and effective resolution in the best interest of the Fijian people.

Overall, this critical juncture underscores the necessity for integrity and fairness in governance, ensuring that the institutions responsible for law and order operate independently from political influences.
