Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj has been vocal in his criticism of the ruling People’s Alliance Party (PAP), alleging its failure to fulfill electoral promises and suggesting that the government is targeting political adversaries. His comments were made during a recent parliamentary session focused on the President’s address, where he drew attention to various pressing issues, including unresolved challenges faced by public workers, the ongoing water crisis in Rakiraki, and insufficient support for dairy and agricultural farmers.

Maharaj specifically called out Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka regarding potential amendments to the 2013 Constitution, raising concerns about the government’s intentions toward Fijian citizenship and freehold land rights. He posed the question, “Is this Government afraid to share publicly that they want to take away all freehold lands, Fijian nationality, equal citizenry, secular state?”

Moreover, Maharaj accused the administration of engaging in a “witch hunt” aimed at former leaders of the FijiFirst party, noting that, over the past 26 months, there has been little to show in terms of legal evidence related to corruption. He emphasized the need for genuine bipartisanship, stating that the government is limiting opposition voices in Parliament despite its claims of fostering unity. “The Opposition is willing to assist because we are here for a better Fiji,” he stated, stressing the importance of moving beyond trivial politics to focus on the nation’s advancement.

These sentiments echo Maharaj’s previous calls for greater transparency and cooperation between the government and opposition. The dialogue surrounding these issues underlines the importance of accountability and constructive communication, which are vital for addressing the nation’s challenges effectively.

There is a hopeful prospect that if both factions can transcend their differences and cultivate cooperation, the result could be a more united and responsive government. A commitment to genuine dialogue may enhance the alignment of government actions with the needs and aspirations of Fijians, steering the nation towards a more democratic and inclusive society.
