Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has stated that members of the Opposition have the ability to change their leader, as permitted by the Constitution. He reaffirmed his position as Opposition Leader despite the division of the Opposition into two separate groups.
On Monday, Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu announced that one faction of the Opposition will be referred to as the 16-bloc, which is led by Mr. Seruiratu, while the other faction will be known as the 9-bloc, led by Ioane Naivalurua.
Mr. Seruiratu emphasized that the 9-bloc remains a part of the Opposition, even though it has indicated support for the Government on certain matters. “This does not imply that they will refrain from criticizing the Government, but there are specific issues where they will express support, including in voting,” he explained.
He added that there have been no discussions regarding a change in the Leader of the Opposition. “As far as the Leader of the Opposition is concerned, there is a procedure under section 78 of the Constitution for appointing the Leader of the Opposition. Unless the members of the Opposition wish to make a change, there is currently no indication from them,” he said.
Additionally, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka revealed that the financing and privileges for the 9-bloc will be clarified by the Speaker and the Secretary-General. “According to standing orders, they must be treated similarly to a party,” Mr. Rabuka noted. “They should have the same entitlements as a party, have a leader, and be provided with facilities for meeting rooms, among other things.”
