Opposition Leadership: A Game of Musical Chairs?

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has stated that the members of the Opposition have the ability to change their leader, as permitted by the Constitution. He asserted that he continues to hold the title of Opposition Leader despite the division of the Opposition into two factions.

Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu confirmed that one faction will be referred to as the 16-bloc, which Seruiratu leads, while the other faction will be known as the 9-bloc, headed by Ioane Naivalurua.

Seruiratu noted that the 9-bloc is still part of the Opposition, even though it has expressed support for the Government on certain matters. He explained, “This does not imply that they won’t criticize the Government, but on specific issues, they will show support, particularly during voting.”

He remarked that there have been no discussions regarding changing the Leader of the Opposition. He emphasized the appointment process outlined in section 78 of the Constitution, stating, “Unless the members of the Opposition decide to make a change, there has been no indication of that from them at this time.”

In parallel, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka mentioned that the funding and privileges for the 9-bloc would be detailed by the Speaker and the Secretary-General. Rabuka asserted that, under the standing orders, this faction must be treated similarly to a political party. He stated, “They should have the same entitlements as a party, including having a leader and access to meeting facilities.”
