Opposition Leader Urges Review of Controversial Anti-Corruption Appointment

Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, has urged the Judicial Services Commission to revoke the appointment of lawyer Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Addressing the media outside Parliament, Seruiratu expressed concern that her appointment reflects poorly on the Government if it proceeds, noting that there is an active investigation against her by the very authority she is set to lead.

While he stated that he holds no personal grievances against Malimali, Seruiratu indicated that the timing of her appointment is inappropriate given the ongoing investigation. He emphasized that such decisions require prudence and wisdom, especially from the Judicial Services Commission, as it could damage the Government’s reputation and cast doubt on the appointee.

Seruiratu reiterated his belief that effective governance stems from strong political leadership alongside adherence to the rule of law and established processes.

Additionally, FijiLive has requested comments from the Judicial Services Commission regarding this situation. Meanwhile, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption had scheduled a press conference for 11:30 am, which has now been postponed to a later time.
