Opposition Leader Initiates Budget Debate amid Political Tensions

Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Finance, Inia Seruiratu, will initiate the debate on the 2024-2025 National Budget in Parliament this morning.

This week’s parliamentary session is particularly significant following the de-registration of the FijiFirst Party (Opposition) last Monday.

In response to questions from FijiLive, both Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Seruiratu confirmed that there have been no discussions regarding the formation of a Government of National Unity.

Seruiratu emphasized the importance of the Opposition Caucus remaining in opposition to hold the Government accountable and ensure the efficient delivery of services to the Fijian people.

It is understood that some Independent MPs are considering joining the Government’s side.

The Prime Minister had a meeting with nine Independent MPs yesterday.

FijiLive has reliably learned that more MPs are expected to shift sides.

Meanwhile, 25 MPs are listed in this morning’s Order Paper to respond to the budget announcement.
