Opposition Leader Demands Inquiry into FICAC Interference Allegations

The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged the Government to initiate an Independent Inquiry following allegations made by former Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, regarding ministerial interference in the agency’s operations.

In a statement, Seruiratu expressed concern about the seriousness of the allegations, emphasizing the need for resolution. He supported the Prime Minister’s call for an investigation.

“To ensure fairness, transparency, and good governance, I propose that this Commission of Inquiry be established following this week’s parliamentary session. This Commission could comprise Judicial Officers, Members of Parliament, and esteemed legal professionals from the private sector, ensuring that none are under ongoing investigations. It is essential that they maintain impartiality and avoid any conflicts of interest related to the issues at hand while upholding the law,” he stated.

Seruiratu remarked, “These allegations are serious and strike at the core of good governance and democracy.”

He also encouraged the former Deputy Commissioner to come forward and clarify her allegations, ensuring that those implicated have the opportunity to defend themselves.

“We are at a critical juncture for our nation, and as elected representatives of the people of Fiji, we must diligently seek to uncover the truth behind these allegations and work to restore the trust of the people,” Seruiratu concluded.
