The Leader of the Opposition in Fiji, Inia Seruiratu, has urged the government to launch an independent inquiry into allegations made by former Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Francis Puleiwai, regarding ministerial interference in FICAC operations.

In a statement, Seruiratu expressed his concern over the matter and emphasized the need for thorough investigation, aligning his views with the Prime Minister’s call for inquiry.

He suggested that a Commission of Inquiry should be established following this week’s parliamentary session, comprising judicial officers, Members of Parliament, and prominent legal professionals from the private sector, ensuring that those selected are not under investigation themselves and are free of conflicts of interest.

Seruiratu emphasized that the seriousness of the allegations undermines good governance and democracy. He has also called on Puleiwai to come forward to clarify her claims and has stressed the importance of allowing those accused the opportunity to defend themselves.

“The time has come for us to act. As elected representatives, we must strive to uncover the truth behind these allegations and work diligently to restore public trust in our governance,” Seruiratu stated.
