Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has voiced his support for the Prime Minister’s initiative to form a board of inquiry related to the ongoing issues concerning the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
Mr. Seruiratu believes that such an inquiry is essential to maintain the integrity of the Government and to address the concerns about how the situation has been managed.
In a recent media statement, Mr. Seruiratu remarked that establishing a board of inquiry is the right course of action. He referenced his previous insistence on the need for an inquiry during the Lynda Tabuya case, where he personally reached out to the Office of the Prime Minister, emphasizing that the Prime Minister, as head of Government, ultimately bears responsibility for these matters. He acknowledged that while independent bodies are tasked with appointments, the Prime Minister must take overall responsibility for issues that emerge within the administration, particularly those connected to FICAC and Barbara Malimali.
He stated that forming a board of inquiry would be beneficial for both the integrity of the Office of the Prime Minister and the individuals involved in the situation.
Mr. Seruiratu expressed a commitment to enhancing women’s representation in leadership and highlighted that addressing discrimination against women involves following the appropriate procedures.
When asked if an inquiry could potentially compromise the integrity of the Judicial Services Commission, Mr. Seruiratu recognized the difficulties these organizations face but stressed the importance of adhering to established systems, processes, and principles of good governance to retain trust in these bodies.
He concluded by expressing hope that the Prime Minister would uphold his commitment to launch an inquiry into these pressing issues.
