Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition in Fiji, has expressed serious concerns regarding the integrity of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). He criticized the ongoing tenure of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner, asserting that it undermines the organization’s credibility to conduct impartial investigations into corruption.
In statements made to FijiLive, Seruiratu urged the government to take decisive action by suspending Malimali, claiming that under her direction, FICAC has faltered in its mission, resulting in diminished public trust and confidence in its ability to combat corrupt practices effectively.
Additionally, Seruiratu took issue with the actions of the Chief Registrar, particularly in how he addressed former FICAC Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai. He deemed the Chief Registrar’s warning to Puleiwai as inappropriate and lacking the necessary respect that should be afforded to individuals raising concerns.
Emphasizing the importance of ethical leadership, Seruiratu stated that Fijians deserve leaders who exemplify integrity. He called for heightened scrutiny in the appointments of individuals to key leadership positions within constitutional bodies.
Seruiratu concluded with a hopeful message, asserting that regaining the public’s confidence in these institutions is essential for upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice and accountability for all.
This situation highlights the ongoing challenges in ensuring accountability and integrity within public institutions, but it also serves as a reminder of the importance of civic engagement and the role of opposition voices in promoting transparency and ethical governance.
