The Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu is urging Barbara Malimali, the head of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), to resign or take a leave of absence until an investigation into serious allegations against her is concluded.

In his statement, Seruiratu expressed grave concerns regarding the investigation surrounding Malimali. He highlighted that last month, the Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, filed a complaint with Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew related to severe accusations of office abuse, intimidation, and witness harassment against Malimali.

Considering the gravity of these allegations, Seruiratu believes it is essential for Malimali to either step down or be suspended to uphold transparency and restore public trust in governmental institutions. He emphasized that maintaining high standards of accountability and integrity is crucial, particularly in issues related to public interest.

Seruiratu questioned the appropriateness of allowing someone with such serious allegations against them to continue in the role of Fiji’s foremost anti-corruption official. He urged that the Judicial Services Commission, which appointed the FICAC Commissioner, should act decisively to remove her from her position in order to restore the integrity of both FICAC and the commission itself.

This situation raises significant questions about the mechanisms in place for addressing allegations against high-ranking officials and the importance of accountability in governance. The outcome of this investigation will likely have a profound impact on public trust in FICAC and its ability to combat corruption effectively.

In a hopeful light, this moment presents an opportunity for reform and reestablishment of public confidence in the integrity of Fiji’s institutions, reinforcing the commitment to transparency and accountability.
