Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition in Fiji, has expressed strong criticisms regarding the current performance of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) under the leadership of Commissioner Barbara Malimali. He argues that as long as Malimali remains in her position, the commission lacks the credibility necessary to conduct independent and effective investigations into corruption.
In an interview with FijiLive, Seruiratu reiterated his demands for the government to promptly suspend Malimali, stating that public trust in FICAC’s ability to fulfill its mandate has significantly diminished during her tenure. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the integrity of institutions meant to combat corruption, calling for leaders who exemplify high moral standards.
Additionally, Seruiratu voiced his discontent with the Chief Registrar’s handling of recent comments made by former FICAC Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai, deeming the response inappropriate. He emphasized the need for respect and dignity in addressing concerns raised by individuals within the justice system.
Seruiratu concluded his remarks by calling for a revival of confidence in Fijian institutions, underscoring the vital need for adherence to the rule of law and accountability. He believes that the commitment to justice should be applied uniformly to regain the trust of the citizens.
