The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has voiced significant concerns regarding the credibility of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) under the leadership of Commissioner Barbara Malimali. Seruiratu asserts that as long as Malimali remains in her position, FICAC cannot be trusted to conduct independent investigations effectively.
In an interview with FijiLive, Seruiratu urged the Government to take immediate action by suspending Malimali, citing a substantial decline in public confidence and credibility under her leadership. He emphasized that FICAC’s ability to combat corruption has been severely compromised.
Additionally, Seruiratu criticized the response of the Chief Registrar to former FICAC Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai, describing it as unacceptable. He condemned the remarks made by the Chief Registrar that cautioned Puleiwai against making the situation a “mockery,” labeling them as repulsive. According to Seruiratu, such comments fail to treat the concerns of Puleiwai with the respect and dignity they deserve.
He stressed the importance of having leaders in positions of authority who are beyond reproach and called for a commitment to appoint individuals of the highest moral caliber in constitutional bodies. Seruiratu concluded with a hopeful message, stating that it is crucial to regain public confidence in institutions by adhering to the rule of law, thereby ensuring justice and accountability for all.
This situation presents an opportunity for reform and renewed public trust in governmental institutions. With the right leadership changes, FICAC has the potential to regain its authority in fighting corruption effectively.
