Former Permanent Secretary to the Office of the Prime Minister, Jioji Kotobalavu, has expressed strong support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent decision to appoint Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) to key ministerial roles, deeming it a “smart move.” He highlights that this bold strategy could significantly enhance the leadership dynamics within the People’s Coalition Government.
Kotobalavu emphasized that the Prime Minister is operating under the authority of Section 92 of the 2013 Constitution, which empowers him to appoint ministers and assistant ministers, including those from opposition parties—a deviation from conventional practices where such roles are typically reserved for ruling party members. The appointed opposition MPs have received “cross-bench” status, formally approved by the Speaker of Parliament, which legitimizes their participation in these government positions.
Kotobalavu believes that these appointments could lead to substantial positive outcomes for governmental functionality, particularly in enhancing the government’s ability to serve its citizens more effectively. He remarks, “This pragmatic decision by PM Rabuka strengthens the leadership of the People’s Coalition Government and improves service delivery to the people.”
As part of this strategic reshuffle, Rabuka may introduce Assistant Ministers in critical sectors such as Public Works, Justice, and Health. This move is intended to alleviate some of the Prime Minister’s workload and promote greater operational efficiency within the government.
The reshuffle signals a positive shift toward inclusivity and collaboration across political lines, fostering a more unified government structure. Kotobalavu’s endorsement reflects an optimistic outlook for Fiji’s political landscape, suggesting that such bipartisan efforts can enhance governmental operations and better address the diverse needs of the Fijian populace.
Overall, this innovative approach by PM Rabuka is poised to create a more collaborative and effective governance model. By harnessing the talents of opposition members, he is not only paving the way for improved political ties but also setting the stage for enhanced public service delivery as Fiji prepares to meet future challenges.
