Opposition Divided: A Tale of Two Groups in Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, announced this morning that the Opposition has divided into two factions. The first faction, led by Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu, consists of 16 members, with Jone Usamate serving as Whip and Ketan Lal as Deputy Whip. The second faction, guided by Iowane Naivalurua, comprises nine members, with Viliame Naupoto as Whip and Alipate Tuicolo as Deputy Whip.

Ratu Naiqama confirmed that all 26 members remain part of the Opposition, functioning within these two distinct groups. He indicated that, considering the formation of two working groups, his office will evaluate the composition of the standing committees to ensure equitable representation for both factions.

Additionally, Alvick Maharaj is currently undecided about which group he will align with in the Opposition, pending the outcome of his appeal regarding the de-registration of the FijiFirst Party.
