Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj has pointed out that there is no obstacle preventing the four Independent MPs in the Opposition from voting alongside the Government, while emphasizing the necessity of adhering to common sense and the rule of law. Maharaj’s comments come in light of recent parliamentary actions where Opposition MPs Sanjay Kirpal, Shalen Kumar, Sachida Nand, and Rinesh Sharma broke ranks to support the Government’s motion regarding the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025.
Historically, under former Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama and the Fiji First Party, crossing the floor for votes was not an established practice. However, following the deregistration of FijiFirst, these MPs have become independents, and as expressed by Maharaj, can now make voting decisions that they deem best.
In this context, some members have recently faced backlash from others in the Opposition for their decision to align with the Government. Maharaj noted that any potential repercussions for MPs who do not align with the Opposition’s agenda would be addressed by the Opposition Caucus.
Last Wednesday marked a notable instance where the four MPs mentioned voted in favor of suspending Standing Orders 6(5) and 92, thereby allowing the Prime Minister to advance the first reading of a significant constitutional amendment bill.
This situation echoes broader discussions about the state of Fiji’s political environment, where the need for productive dialogue and cohesion among parliamentarians has been underlined. As Fiji navigates these political dynamics, the hope remains that open discussions will lead to a more cooperative and effective governance structure, enhancing the fabric of democracy within the nation.
The article highlights ongoing tensions and calls for unity within the parliamentary framework, reaffirming the need for unity and civility in political discourse, which are vital to ensuring the advancement of governance and accountability in Fiji’s evolving political landscape.
