Opposition MP Viam Pillay has urged the Government to enhance its response to the severe flooding that has impacted communities in the Western Division. Pillay highlighted that the current situation has left numerous villages and settlements in dire conditions, emphasizing that the ground-level response seems inadequate given the urgency of the crisis.
“We in the Opposition are calling on the relevant Ministries and authorities to move immediately. It is not enough to monitor from a distance while villages and settlements are cut off,” he stated, stressing the need for prompt action.
The MP pointed out that communities are grappling with rising water levels, obstructed roads, and damaged infrastructure, necessitating immediate assistance. Pillay noted that many families are experiencing significant disruptions, with issues such as damaged crossings, roads buried in debris, and critical water shortages due to broken pipes.
“The Government should already be on the ground with the necessary machinery and personnel to clear access and restore essential services,” he asserted, asserting that the impact on families, farmers, and businesses is considerable. He expressed concern that normalcy cannot be restored until critical infrastructure is fully operational.
Pillay concluded by urging authorities to act swiftly to restore access and essential services to the flood-affected areas in the West, highlighting the urgency of the situation and the need for a comprehensive response to the crisis. The call for quick action underscores a shared hope for recovery and restoration of normal life in the affected communities.
