Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, has urged the Judicial Services Commission to retract the appointment of lawyer Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Seruiratu expressed that her appointment could negatively reflect on the Government. He emphasized that he holds no personal grievances against Malimali but pointed out that there is an ongoing investigation involving her led by the very authority she is set to oversee.
He conveyed his surprise at the situation, although he noted that such actions align with the Government’s ongoing patterns since its inception. Seruiratu criticized the timing of the appointment, given the current investigation, stating that it reflects a lack of common sense and wisdom from the Judicial Services Commission.
“Such decisions tarnish the reputation of both the Government and the appointee,” he remarked. He has consistently maintained that effective governance stems from strong political leadership, adherence to the rule of law, and systematic processes.
FijiLive has also sought comments from the Judicial Services Commission regarding this matter. Meanwhile, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption had scheduled a press conference for 11:30 am, which has been postponed to an unspecified later time or date.
