The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged the Judicial Services Commission to reconsider their decision to appoint lawyer Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
In a media statement outside Parliament, Seruiratu expressed concerns that proceeding with her appointment could reflect poorly on the Government. He noted that there is an ongoing investigation involving Malimali by the very authority she is set to lead.
Seruiratu conveyed his surprise at the decision, indicating that it aligns with a troubling trend he has observed from the Government since it took office. He emphasized that the timing of the appointment is particularly inappropriate given the active investigation.
“It requires common sense and wisdom, especially from the Judicial Services Commission, as it tarnishes the image of the Government and raises implications for the appointee herself,” he stated.
He also reiterated that good governance stems from effective political leadership and adherence to the rule of law.
Additionally, FijiLive has sought comments from the Judicial Services Commission regarding this matter. The FICAC had scheduled a press conference for 11:30 am, but it has since been postponed to an unspecified later time or date.
