The Leader of the Opposition in Fiji, Inia Seruiratu, has raised serious concerns regarding the leadership of Barbara Malimali, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). He argues that FICAC has lost its credibility and the public’s trust in its ability to conduct independent investigations as long as Malimali remains in charge.
In an interview with FijiLive, Seruiratu called on the government to take swift action by suspending Malimali from her role. According to him, her leadership has significantly undermined public confidence in FICAC’s mission to combat corruption within the country.
Seruiratu also criticized the response of the Chief Registrar concerning the former FICAC Deputy Commissioner Francis Puleiwai. He deemed the Chief Registrar’s comments, which warned Puleiwai against making a “mockery” of the office, as inappropriate. He emphasized that the Chief Registrar, being a judicial officer, should address concerns with the utmost respect and dignity.
The opposition leader expressed that Fijians deserve leaders who exemplify integrity and are above reproach. He stressed the importance of appointing individuals of high moral standards to pivotal constitutional roles. “We need to restore confidence in our institutions by upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice and accountability for all,” Seruiratu remarked.
This situation underscores the critical nature of maintaining integrity and accountability in leadership roles, especially in organizations tasked with combating corruption. The call for reform can serve as a positive impetus for strengthening governmental institutions, ensuring they operate transparently and effectively, thereby restoring public trust.
In summary, Seruiratu’s call to action emphasizes the need for honor and accountability in government positions, which could pave the way for greater transparency and justice in Fiji moving forward.
